Hold Me Closer Necromancer Necromancer Series Lish McBride Books
It's almost a little ridiculous that this book has any rating under five stars, though differences in taste happen. I mean, other people are clearly wrong, but that's alright. People are wrong sometimes. Most people, however, can see this book for what it is: hilarious, witty, and engaging. The characters are intriguing: they each have their own very early twenties personalities and shared young people problems, but, on top of that, they have very strange, paranormal problems, issues that would kill normal people and could potentially be the end of them. But, in a very Harry Potter vein, McBride's friends are extremely loyal. They will sacrifice themselves for each other, and sometimes do. That aspect of the book was very touching. There are veins of witty jokes: running song titles (as amusing as the cover title) and references to what has come before this book in various other pieces of literature. But this paranormal read is unlike any other book I've read. It takes stale horror and paranormal themes and makes them, well, believable and real. Sam, his friends, his family and their various life traumas give the book that authentic feel. The paranormal elements add intrigue to the book, but it is stable even when those elements are not at play. All this to say, this is an author you should give your attention to, paranormal fan or not. An elite writer.Tags : Amazon.com: Hold Me Closer, Necromancer (Necromancer Series) (9780805090987): Lish McBride: Books,Lish McBride,Hold Me Closer, Necromancer (Necromancer Series),Henry Holt and Co. Hold Me Closer Necromancer Necromancer Series Lish McBride Books Reviews
~~~~3.5 Stars~~~~~~
This book was a lighthearted, well written, fast paced, creature filled fun read. Never once did I wish the pace and progress to pick up. The characters were well done and loveable/detestable (where appropriate). In fact the characters were what made this book enjoyable. Necromancy is definitely a difficult topic to steer clear of Creepsville while fostering the Feels for a smart ass MC who you can't help but root for. I recommend this book to anyone that likes funny, fast paced, paranormal character driven novels where all loose ends are neatly wrapped up by the end. I am definitely going to read book #2 though it's not at the top of my ever growing, seemingly insurmountable TBR list.
Lish McBride's Hold Me Closer, Necromancer may have been a victim of very high expectations. Every review I'd read told me I was going to love this book. I was convinced it was going to be my favorite book of all time. When I was finally able to purchase it, I bought it and devoured it and while I liked it an awful lot, it didn't quite meet my admittedly lofty expectations.
Sam is your typical slacker. He didn't go to college, is working at a fast food restaurant, and hangs out with his friends. Actually, this is the life I lived before I wised up really fast and went to college, so it might have felt all too familiar. In a down-spiraling comedy of errors, Sam runs into Douglas, a powerful necromancer who recognizes that Sam is one as well. The problem? Sam had no idea.
Douglas is determined to get Sam under his thumb, and gives him one week to decide to come to work for him. Only problem is, Douglas doesn't really want to give Sam a choice, and Sam has to turn to his newly discovered friends, who get tangled up as well, to help him.
The story itself could probably fall under the "New Adult" genre that literary agents and publishers seem to hate, but exists anyway. It's not quite the urban fantasy of an adult novel, but not quite young adult fiction, either. The parts of the book that are in Sam's POV are fantastic, with snappy dialogue and a fast pace. What I didn't love were the parts that switched over to Douglas' POV (and went from first person to third) which seemed to drag more. I kept wanting to skim them to get back to Sam. More Sam! I loved Sam!
Overall, I liked the book a lot, and those who read a lot of urban fantasy will find plot elements that seem to be tributes of sorts to other urban fantasy stories. I'm looking forward to the next one and hope there's More!Sam!
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer is the first in Author Lish McBride's Necromancer series, following late bloomer necromancer Sam LaCroix and the troubles his newly budding powers are causing him.
Sam has, up until now, lived a fairly normal life. Dropped out of college, working a dead-end job, and barely scraping by. After a game of make-shift hockey behind work during break, Sam becomes tangled up with Douglas Montgomery, a very dangerous necromancer who has plans for Sam.
One week is all Sam gets to figure out what to do join forces with Douglas, or have everyone he loves be murdered. That week is, without a doubt, one of the worst of Sam's life.
This was a very enjoyable novel. It took some time to really get into, as I felt the story swerved a bit too abruptly to Brid, the hybrid werewolf who eventually becomes the love interest. There was no subtlety there, and I suppose others would appreciate that but it was a little too much for my taste. Other than that though, I felt the writing was well done, the story was chalk full of drama and suspense, not to mention snippets of horror. In the end, despite the little hiccup in the beginning, I was absorbed completely into this book and am glad I decided to pick it up!
