First, I liked author's previous book in this series enough to buy this second. Maybe if I read them further apart from each other, I would like this one better. But - SPOILER ALERT START - a key item in both books is rape and violation of women, and that's just not what I'm looking for in a romance. I know 1 in 4 women in America are raped (1 in 3 in certain demographic segments) so seeing these items as topics every once in a while in books is just realistic, but in this series 2 out of 2 is too much for me. END OF SPOILER.Otherwise, well-written, but hero and heroine not too believable as a match - they are good people, but author fails to give their romantic/love relationship any kind of a good start. It's just interaction, slip and fall, sudden attraction that then with no progression is now love. Not satisfying.

Anne Perfect Husband Gayle Wilson 9780373291526 Books Reviews
Major Ian Sinclair was severely wounded in the Peninsula. He still bears shrapnel that may end his life at any moment if it shifts and pierces a vital organ. He is plagued by a bad leg and bad lungs. He keeps the severity of his condition from everyone, particularly his elder brother who is too fiercely protective of him already. He is surprised by the visit of a solicitor who tells him that he has been named as a guardian to the daughter of the very man who was responsible for his wounds and for the deaths of many of his men. Yet he is an honorable man and would not wish an innocent daughter to suffer the sins of her father. And it is Christmas and he is alone, his newly married brother spending time with his wife, so he travels to the school of the daughter who had been neglected by her father in hopes of giving a poor orphan girl a decent Christmas.
Instead of a young girl, he finds a young woman, innocent of the knowledge of her father's cowardice, and deprived of the kind of life she deserves. But she is used to holidays at the school and has thought she'd continue on at the school, teaching and caring for other poor girls. Nevertheless, Ian still offers to take her home for the holidays and the kindly Headmistress bids him to give her the kind of life she should have had.
Anne Darlington is surprised and puzzled by the appearance of a guardian she had never expected, but for some reason she feels she should accept, to experience something other than the school she has known all her life, particularly if she is destined to return to spend the rest of her days there.
Anne is a lovely heroine. When they encounter highwaymen along the road she helps Ian dispatch them. She's not keen on having a Season, but it is what Ian feels she deserves, and the dresses and the balls are not entirely unwelcome... but mostly it is her growing attraction to her guardian that interests her. Ian, of course, is interested, too, but aside from wanting to be a proper guardian, he feels she deserves happiness, not a relationship with a man who could leave her in sorrow and heartbreak at any moment.
I very much enjoyed the tale of these two people and their romance.
Possible SPOILERS---
The sex is minimal and restrained--except there is a rape (NOT perpetrated by the hero), so those who wish to avoid such things in their romances should beware.
It was a well written book. Gayle Wilson is a talented writer and the story was very good. A somewhat crippled retired major is forced to take on the responsibility to be the guardian for a fellow officer's child after the being injured due the cowardice of that officer. He expects a child to home for Christmas but ends up with a young woman.
Needless to say, Ian needs time to adjust to the guardianship of a pretty young girl and to recuperate from his near deadly wounds. In the company of Anne, however, he goes from one scrap to another and nearly ends up dead.
No spoilers here. But you know the ending already, obviously, but the road to get there is interesting and well done.
It was a good story. Well worth reading and I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.
Let me being by saying I LOVED this book. God knows I'm a sucker for a wounded hero and Ian Sinclair is probably one of the best heroes I have ever encountered..........BUT...........
The ending seemed very rushed. When the BIG CONFLICT is finally resolved, the main characters are hardly speaking to one another, both out of fear of what the other is "Really Thinking." Then, in come the in-laws for a visit, and the author seems to be more preoccupied with their romance than she is with the flailing romance of the two main characters. That is one of the things that I hate about books in a series, the authors seem to keep tripping over previous stories and future stories to the point of the current story getting lost. This is what happened here.
And even worse there is no resolution to the "Big Secret".......SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Ian is worried that he cannot commit to Anne because of the shrapnel in his chest possibly moving and killing him, leaving her widowed, possibly with young children to raise on her own, and here is how it ended....
""No one has guarantees. Not of anything"
That was another illusion. That there would be years to savor. Sometimes there were. And sometimes there were not."
Whaat the heck did that mean? Did he die young or did they have a long and happy life together. This theme was too relevant to the story for there to be no resolution in the end. I do not like books that are written for the reader to decide on their own how it turned out. When I buy a book or see a movie, I am paying for three things....a beginning, a middle and an ending. If the author doesn't provide the ending for me, I feel cheated. No one wants to read book with the final chapter torn out.
