Douglas is the typical chic-lit hero: aloof, controlled and apparently cold. A nobleman by birth and successful businessman in his own right, the last thing he needs is his sister’s three kids living with him. Sadly, after the accident that took his sister’s and her husband’s life that is exactly what happened.Fortunately for the kids, Julia (their dad’s sister) was also appointed as their guardian, but there was a delay in her being able to leave her life in the States to move in with them at Sommersgate House.
We soon learn that both Julia and Douglas have felt an incredibly strong attraction for each other since the very first time they met. For various reasons they never let it show, but now living together and spending more and more time in each other’s presence while caring for their nieces and nephew… well, things start to happen.
Julia is a funny, loving, sassy delightful woman. She made me laugh at her antics and her temper and I just loved how she little by little got under Douglas’ skin and melted his heart.
I absolutely adored witnessing Douglas’ slow but steady progress in getting in touch with his heart. With a less than lovely childhood, although he had everything a boy could dream of, his parents left much to be desired. This works in our favor as we get a bossy, extra alpha, sexy hunk with a title…. Total score!
With an explosive chemistry, these two stubborn souls go (sometimes hilariously) head to head, time and time again. And not only do they need to learn how to care for their grieving charges, but they also have to deal with a conniving viper (aka Douglas’ mother), dangerous criminals and a cursed house.
I just love KA’s storytelling, there’s something that makes me dive into the story and completely engage with each and every character. There were some parts of their inner musings I felt were a bit too lengthy, but I absolutely loved that we get quite a lot of Douglas’ PoV.
I laughed, I sniveled, I smiled through most of the book and my heart melted more than once. I had forgotten just how great this story was and how unbelievably hot Douglas and Julia could be together. I highly recommend reading Sommersgate House a story of true love and magic, a bit different from her other stories but a total KA classic nonetheless.

What a magical story. I’ve always enjoyed a wide range of books, and was delighted that this one had a paranormal twist.
Julia’s brother Gavin was married to Douglas’ sister Tamsin. They were tragically killed in an accident leaving behind three beautiful children. In accordance with their Will, Julia and Douglas are to jointly raise the kids in Douglas’ Victorian Mansion, Sommersgate House. Julia and Douglas are both great characters. There has always been an attraction between them, however Julia has sworn off men and Douglas has never known love.
Gah! Douglas was so swoony! That man. He may not have had any experience or idea what he was doing, but the man could seriously woo and I fell in love with him right alongside Julia. I admired his determination to win Julia’s hand and found myself grinning at his smug reactions to Julia’s frustration.
Julia was also great, although she was a little too stubborn and hard headed at times. She tried her best to fight her heart's pull towards Douglas, but it wasn’t because she didn’t want him. No, it was because she was scared of getting hurt again. Understandable, but she didn’t stand a chance against that hot man.
Sommersgate House had a number of funny scenes, sweet scenes and some that were sad. The secondary characters added to the story and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. KA books are always good and this was no exception.
So I'm just going to start this review by saying that I actually have no idea what the reading order for this series is. and KA's website show this as the book to read first, but Goodreads shows this as book 2. I decided to read this first, since 2 out of 3 places showed that as the right thing to do.
Now that I've got that out of the way, Sommersgate House. I've been holding off on picking up this series for a while because I was worried it wouldn't live up to what I generally expect from KA. The Ghosts and Reincarnation series just seem like the type that'll be hit or miss for me and I haaaate reading misses, as I'm sure anyone does. I want to love every book all the time. So yeah, I held off on picking up Sommersgate. But now I'm in need of some KA, so I figured it was a good time to try it out. And...honestly, it's not anywhere near my favorite.
The premise sounded great. A marriage of convenience mixed with some haunting? Sounds cool! Unfortunately, it took me a while to actually get into the novel. I think this was partly because it was written in third person POVs. I was glad to get multiple perspectives (Douglas' mainly) but the third person made it tough to really get attached, which made it take a while.
Another negative for me was the way Douglas pursued Julia. I'm always here for an alpha male. Persistence and devotion make my day--his solid interest and protectiveness for Julia were actually my favorite things about him. HOWEVER. Douglas was uncomfortably pushy at first, in my opinion. She was very adamant with her no, and while she did change her mind I just wasn't 100% on board with Douglas' actions in the process.
That said. Douglas and Julia had a great push and pull chemistry, and their relationship built slowly on the page in such a satisfying way. Not a surprise, since KA is a romance master. I was so pleased with their overall journey as a couple, and I loved them together. I wish we did get more of them solidly and comfortably TOGETHER, but that's me making a small greedy gripe.
There were two other notable aspects to the novel along with the romance the children and the haunting. As for the children, I loved seeing both Julia and Douglas with them. Julia as the loving aunt, and Douglas with his melting heart. It was so sweet. And the haunting added a fun little something extra to the overall story. There's ghosts and a curse on the house, and it was nice seeing that come full circle as our main characters reached their own.
Overall, I really liked Sommersgate House. The romance built in a satisfying way, and there were some extra aspects that I definitely enjoyed. However, this is nowhere near my favorite Kristen Ashley novel and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed that this one didn't fully click with me. I do plan on continuing the series--and I am actually looking forward to it!
