I really did enjoy this book. The story was a good one. For the most part, the characters were well written. The struggle that one the main characters had with accepting her attraction to another woman was more than reasonable. However, at various times that character's struggle crossed the line into homophobia. As irritating as that was, I was okay with that at first because I'm sure there are people out there who have that same struggle.
There's such a delicate balance to be struck between keeping elements of a story as real as possible, while at the same time not weighing it down to the point of being frustrating.
Having said that...
What frustrated me was how that struggle lasted well past the point she actually started dating the woman she said she loved--essentially right up until the last page or two in the book.
The book would have been so much more satisfying if that particular drama would have ended sooner. After all, her lack of a spine for most of the book when dealing with her family was more than enough of a character flaw. Just one or two more chapters of Annie having come to terms with her sexuality would have improved my overall satisfaction with the story dramatically.
It may sound like I didn't think much of Annie, or the book in general. That's not true. I would still recommend it. The romance itself was pretty great.

Something in the Wine Jae 9783955330057 Books Reviews

I’ve never expected to fall head over heels for this book instantly. Being a non-wine drinker, it surprised me to have been attracted to its title and cover design when I saw it on . Normally I’d not pay attention to it. But like an alcoholic, I found myself having an excessive consumption of this book—it gripped me, took up my night and robbed me of sleep. I really enjoyed reading this book.

The beauty of this book is in the realistic connection and sweet romance between the two heroines which begins where only the reader can see and feel it. It is exciting and life-affirming, to perceive something that may really exist and become one with the characters. This is truly good read. Something in the Wine introduced me to Jae and led me to more of her books. She is truly one excellent and passionate writer.
I really enjoyed this book and stayed up way too late reading because I didn't want to put it down. I read it in 3 days, which is fast for me. It's a story about a woman coming to realize that she's a lesbian. You follow the process she goes through as she comes out and as she falls in love and the love and support of the woman she falls in love with. The tender expressions of love from each woman was touching. I love Jae's books and this is another well written book by her. I didn't want it to end and fortunately there was a short story added to the end to fulfill that wish. The characters were well developed and their interactions were very sweet. I highly recommend this book and I will enjoy reading it again.
Ok I have to say, this book was very true and realistic when it came to the fears and confusion that comes with coming to terms with sexuality, society and being comfortable in your own skin. Now not everyone will feel like this. Not everyone throws the word homophobic out there when trying to determine if they are attracted to the same sex.
Also there is a reference that compares being a lesbian to being a wiccain witch. That was completely wrong. But then again there are morons out there that would see this as being gospel... ( bible enthusiast)
I truly enjoyed being pulled in to the main characters lives as they slowly become so invloved with another they never saw it coming. To me that's the best kinda of love.
This is a very well written book.
The sub characters were also engaging. Jake was well developed and stayed true to his personality to the end. Others added good substance but I felt could of been more involved in some areas.
The valentines story was also really good. I would of liked a bit more of there life together. However as a whole, this is a must read book. You will find it charming and very interesting.
I look forward to seeing what's next by Jae.
Something in the Wine is a charming lesbian romance. Spoiler – no sex in this book. Yet, it was sweet and I couldn’t put it down. Jake sets up a blind date for his straight sister Annie with his friend Drew. Jake doesn’t tell his sister that Drew is a woman. He also leads Drew to believe that Annie wants the date with Drew. The two hatch a plan to turn the practical joke back onto Jack by pretending that Annie has fallen for Drew and they are a couple. In the midst of plotting and executing the joke, Annie and Drew become friends, and before they know it, they each start to develop feelings for the other.

Jae is an excellent story teller and writer. I won’t lie, I was a little disappointed there was no sex. However, I think no sex worked for this book because it allowed the story to concentrate on raw feelings of love, respect, and admiration. So now Jae, where do I find my own Drew?
I gave this four stars because I admire the author and her vast library of excellent stories. This one was OK, but not as good as most of her other books.

I had a hard time liking Annie, in fact after finishing this book last night, and after giving it some thought, I still have a hard time liking her. She is supposed to be inexperienced in love and sex, but this character took it to depths with which most people can't sympathize. She is completely awkward and without apparent understanding of how the female anatomy works. She is disapproving of anything out of the ordinary, and kind of a cold fish.

Now, I really liked Drew, although I wouldn't have had nearly the patience with Annie as Drew had. But I liked her character and the development of her character as the story progressed.

And what was with Jake, Annie's brother? Did this guy have one single redeeming quality? And why did Annie call him, after the years of torture she suffered at his hands, to get tips on how to seduce a woman? He's the last person I would have called.

Jae has hit many home runs. This was not one of them. But don't let this review keep you from reading all her other romances. They are excellent, which makes this one pale in comparison.
