This is the third book in the series. The first two were The Trouble with Patience and A Sweet Misfortune.

Grace is lonely. Her husband died a few years ago, leaving her with a farm to run and an ailing father. Her friend in town encourages her to get out more and wants her to look for happiness. Grace gets introduced to an attorney, but she's also got another man in her life Robert.

Robert is desperate. He lost his own farm, and when his wife died, he discovered she had three children she'd never told him about. Disgraced, he left town for a fresh start. When he hears about a chance to work on Grace's farm, he sees it as an opportunity to get back on his feet. Grace is kind to him, but he's not interested in getting duped by another woman.

This was a sweet story with lovable characters. There's a bit of drama, but this is mostly a romance. When I read the first book, I had a slight issue with the end dragging out a bit, and there was a lull toward the end in this one as well. Also, the timing of the "rescue" seemed a bit unrealistic, but I still liked the book.

I wasn't able to read the second book in the series, but none of the main characters from the first two books appear in this one, so you can read them alone or out of order. Overall, it's a good story that I enjoyed.

Tattered, frayed, and weary describe the appearance of Robert and the children; these same words describe the lives of the main characters. As trust, faith, and respect replace the losses in each of their lives, second chances in hope and love unfurl. Seeking Spiritual guidance in decision making is beautifully woven in the story.
Widowed much too young, Grace Bidwell, is overwhelmed with caring for her invalid father, Owen, and trying to save her potato farm. She realizes that she must seek hired help because the tasks are more than she can handle. She places a Hired Help Ad in Eli's Mercantile. It is here that she first encounters the three ragamuffin children. We see the compassionate side Grace as she overhears the youngest child, Sarah, being told that there was no money to buy a peppermint stick for the three to share. Grace buys each of the children a peppermint stick against the protest of the oldest, Tom. Grace is once again reminded of the great void and desire in her heart, motherhood.
Robert Frazier, a broken man torn by the loss of his wife of two months, the loss of his wheat farm, and the obligation of caring for three stepchildren that he didn't know existed until after Ada's death, is filled with bitterness and mistrust. The responsibility placed upon him is almost unbearable. Since he and the children are homeless, they camp outdoors as he looks for work to care for his new, unplanned family. Robert, though discouraged, sought the Lord's help in finding a way to fulfill his obligations.
A ray of hope is brought into all of the lives as Robert finds the help wanted ad and is hired to help at Bidwell's Potato Farm. At Grace's insistence, the children are later brought to live in the farmhouse with her and her dad. The children helped fulfill her desire for a family and children of her own.Even with the job, Robert still has issues with anger and humiliation that he must resolve. He continues to seek forgiveness for his anger and Spiritual guidance. Eventually these feelings begin to resolve. Robert's resentments changed to respect and love. He and Grace also developed a strong attraction for each other. But, could he ever trust again? Just as he had built fences on the farm, he had fenced his heart. Their relationship, like a piece of fabric, had many wrinkles that had to be smoothed and ironed out. With faith and trusting hearts a second chance at love was possible. This is one book that I was not ready for it to end. I think it needs a sequel.
Maggie Brendan's conclusion to her Virtues and Vices of the Old West series, Trusting Grace, is a heartwarming story set in the picturesque Gallatin Valley in Montana. As in all of her books, Brendan researches and shares interesting historical facts to add to her realistic fiction. She also shares a part of her personal life as she educates the reader on a rare disease, CIDP, which her husband and Grace's dad, Owen, suffer from. I have read all of Brendan's books, and I look forward to future ones.

Tis a leisurely good read.
Very good read. The story kept me involved right to the last page.
It's a good story, but too easy to read - I'd like more complex sentence structure. But that's me, some could enjoy the simplicity. The story is good, but predictable.
