Cannibal World Wine of the Gods Book 30 eBook Pam Uphoff Reviews
this book has more Xen and Q than we have seen in the last few books. we get to see them fighting. this book is about 2 new worlds that we have never seen and their meeting. the book is short, but a good addition to the series. we meet a lot of good and bad people from these places. and then we are set up for the next book.
It's going to take me longer to write the review than it took to read the book. Well, not LITERALLY, but I AM going to have to work harder.
That's as it should be, though. These books are a LOT of fun to read. There is a blend of magic potion, super powers, and mundane transactions that keeps the action alive.
This time, there is an entire wicked planet to play the role of bad guy.
The plot line of parallel worlds continues to be a focal point driving the action. In this case, though, it is the merging of worlds which presents the conflict. Instead of the infinite splintering of existence, based on personal choices, it takes an event of (literally) cosmic proportions to split off a universe. The main worlds of the narrative have been formed by impact by comets (or maybe an asteroid) and appear to be stable. Lesser events, such as a nuclear war, may also result in a split universe, but in those lesser cases, the twanging of the guitar string (I just made that up. Is it a simile?) dampens, and universes can recombine. When that happens, there is a physical merge of objects occupying the corresponding points in both worlds. It's not always perfect; in fact, sometimes it's lethal, as the merge appears to be largely not under the control of the individuals. So, if you happen to be standing near a tree, you might merge with it. And then you die. (Or just leave.) (Because you are a tree.)
On one particular world, though, the picture is different. They have learned how to control the process a bit, and use their knowledge to increase their own life span at the expense of the alternate world; they also use a merge event to loot scarce material resources. And after they have taken over the bodies of their unwilling hosts, anyone who has not been occupied is left to die. This makes their civilization mass murderers on a huge scale.
The characters are nicely limited in their use of overwhelming super-powers, and the consequences of a botched merger are described creepily. The use of alternative merger methods, consisting of dirty water and barbecued chicken (or incinerated rats) is also depicted in a fashion calculated to make you want to brush your teeth. Characters from worlds introduced earlier in the series make their appearance after realistic introductions.
I like the way the entire problem of presenting alternative universes to a disbelieving population is handled. Instead of spending paragraph after paragraph of dialogue between dimensional travelers and skeptical authorities, we get to see what happens when another world destructively appears No time is spent in arguing; the bad guys just show up, and start killing. It's a relief!
I read this as a Unlimited selection.
Great story as always, but this one didn't grab me like the others. Very good character development of new characters.
A new twist on dimensional travel. A few centuries ago something tore a parallel Earth out of its universe and sent it wandering. After accidentally colliding with another parallel Earth, the survivors find that they average ages with any human they merge with and the resources of the other Earth replenish their own. Since then, they've gained some control over the process, swallowing Earth after Earth, killing billions each time.
Xen and Quail, having detected dimensional activity, show up on the latest victim Earth find not another civilization with gates, but the cannibal Earth starting to merge. Their struggle to save the world while running an evaluation at the same kept me turning the page. This was a bit darker than most of the series; the immediate threat to the population of an entire world meant that there was no time for magical pranksterism that lightens other books in the series.
As always with this series I was sorry to have reached the end, though it's clear that there is still more to come.
